Venice is unbelievable! I know it’s been said to death – but you HAVE to visit here. I’ve been pooh-poohing Venice for sometime (in my mind), and was almost going to give it a miss. All that came to mind when I thought of Venice were those news articles like this one: Why Venice should charge tourists 30 Euros or perhaps getting hit with a ridiculous bill of over 100 Euros for 4 coffees, or the articles that tell us that Venice is literally sinking under the weight of tourism.
So yeah, Venice wasn’t actually part of my trip. Then I saw how expensive Italy was. Ok, maybe I shouldn’t compare it to South-East Asia, but Italy SHOULD have more options for backpackers! I was looking at staying in a few different towns/cities, and just had a look at Venice for fun, when I saw a hostel for only 12 Euros a night! Yeah, there is a 2 or 3 Euro tax per night on top of that, but still, it was really good (the hostel was having a special, the price down from 20 Euros a night). Yes, there is a crazy amount of tourists (although percentage wise, in relation to the size of the city, not more than Florence). Somehow though, it’s just a really different atmosphere to Florence. Venice is really beautiful, made more beautiful by the fact that THERE IS NO TRAFFIC! Well, there is traffic on the water, but where people are walking, there are no cars or scooters, and I’ve only seen about two bicycles so far. It’s the perfect walking city!
The downsides are that it’s ridiculously expensive, and it can take a while to actually get anywhere, as you have to find a bridge to cross the canals!! It literally is ‘The Floating City’. See here for current prices on Gondola Rides!
All in all, I recommend Venice as a must-see destination, especially for you couples or newly-weds out there! This is definitely a city for romance!
